On August 28th, a seismic shift occurred in B.C.’s political landscape, fundamentally changing how I viewed my role as the MLA for West Vancouver-Capilano.
High-ranking insiders from my former party, BC United, hastily negotiated a deal that withdrew our candidates to support another party, a move I found deeply disturbing. This was done without consulting party members, sitting MLAs, or candidates, tearing at the very fundamentals of democracy.
This backroom deal was a political manoeuvre that disenfranchised hundreds of thousands of voters and betrayed loyal candidates. It cast aside the hard work and dedication of many first-time candidates who believed in a cause — a cause that was suddenly abandoned.
In the weeks following this unsettling change, I listened closely to my constituents. The message was clear: there is a growing disdain for the NDP’s governance, yet a significant worry with supporting the BC Conservatives — a party not aligned with the community’s values or readiness to govern.
This constituency longs for fiscal responsibility and a vibrant economy but rejects the extremism and divisive rhetoric that have come to characterize much of today’s political discourse. We crave leadership that is moderate, thoughtful, and inclusive.
Given these extraordinary circumstances, I have decided to run for re-election as an independent.
This decision stems from a deep-seated belief in representing my constituents authentically, without the constraints or agendas of a party that no longer aligns with the community’s values.
As an independent MLA, I will have the ability to focus solely on what is best for West Vancouver-Capilano. I will champion policies that foster a strong private sector economy, world-class public services, and a healthcare system that meets your needs. My commitment is to a government that is accountable and transparent. One that builds bridges, not barriers.
Running as an independent also places me in a unique position to potentially hold the balance of power in the next legislative session. This means I can effectively advocate for policies that reflect B.C.’s shared values and address your challenges with tangible, practical solutions.
I am deeply grateful for the encouragement and support I have received thus far. It has been my honour to serve this community as a MLA, and I ask for your continued trust and support. On October 19th, let’s stand together for a government that truly represents us all. I am eager to continue this work, ensuring that West Vancouver-Capilano remains a wonderful place to live, work, and grow.
