Samuel Hersey, 29, of West Vancouver, pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer stemming from an incident at a community event in August 2023.
The charges originated from an altercation during the Hoedown in Dundarave event, where two West Vancouver Police Department officers conducting public safety patrols halted a vehicle for an impaired driving inquiry. The driver, later identified as Hersey, turned aggressive, leading to four criminal charges: Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance, Refusal to Provide a Breath Sample, Assault of a Peace Officer Causing Bodily Harm, and Uttering Threats.
On January 25, 2024, Hersey entered a guilty plea for the “Assault of a Peace Officer” charge at North Vancouver Provincial Court. In response, the court sentenced Hersey to a suspended sentence with one-year probation.
“Festivals and community events are important moments to gather with neighbours and celebrate the many things that make our West Vancouver community special,” said Sgt. Chris Bigland. “WVPD officers work very hard to ensure the safety and security of the public during these celebrations. The assault of officers going about their duties, and the risk that presents to the surrounding public, is something we take very seriously.”
WVPD expressed gratitude towards the Crown for their dedication to the case and to the witnesses who provided crucial accounts of the incident.
