A teenager who drove a vehicle into Burrard Inlet at the behest of an American live streamer has been charged.
Constable Sam Zacharias, media relations officer for Port Moody Police Department, said the charge of Mischief under $5000 has been approved against Jawad FAWWAZ, and the matter is now before the courts.
His first court appearance is Monday, May 13, 2024 at Port Coquitlam Courthouse.
The incident happened on March 4, just before 10 p.m., when officers responded to a report of a live-streaming video at Rocky Point boat launch. An American live streamer allegedly paid the teen to drive his vehicle into the inlet.
“Our understanding is that the accused person here was being live-streamed by a very famous live streamer in the United States, and there was some kind of compensation offered for this individual to drive his vehicle into a body of water,” Const. Sam Zacharias was quoted in a GlobalBC report.
The clean-up job costs Port Moody thousands of dollars, the officer added.
The vehicle was fully submerged in the water when police arrived. The 19-year-old driver was located at the scene and detained and criminal charges have now been laid.
