Squamish Nation has issued a community notice regarding a sewage leak at Capilano River. The public is advised to stay clear of the water in the area and avoid using the river for fishing, swimming, bathing or entering the water for any reason.
“We would like to let the community know that the sewage flow to the Capilano River has now been stopped and is being diverted to vacuum trucks for disposal. Please continue to stay clear of the area and refrain from using the water or entering the river,” the nation said.
The sewage was reported on March 6, at approximately 12:45 pm. The spill was seeping from a private property and entering the Capilano River via a storm drain outfall pipe. The amount of material released into the river is unknown.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment says extensive testing has been conducted but determining the source of the discharge has been challenging. An environmental consultant was on site yesterday to mitigate and address the discharge, and more staff and resources will be available today to deal with the discharge.
Mitigation and prevention efforts are expected to continue throughout the upcoming week until source of the release can be identified and addressed. The results from samples taken on March 10 are expected early this upcoming week. An Environmental Emergency Response Officer continues to monitor the situation.
