The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) is calling for witnesses to an arrest in North Vancouver on December 28, 2024, during which a man sustained an injury.
According to the RCMP, the incident began around 9:30 p.m. when police were dispatched to assist in discharging a man from Lions Gate Hospital. Shortly afterward, the man was reportedly seen urinating on the RCMP detachment building located across the street from the hospital.
The man was subsequently arrested and returned to the hospital, where it was discovered he had sustained an injury.
The IIO, which investigates police-related incidents involving serious harm or death, was notified shortly after the event and has launched an investigation. The inquiry will determine whether the injury qualifies as “serious harm” under the Police Act and assess whether the officers’ actions during the arrest were necessary, reasonable, and proportionate.
The IIO urges anyone who witnessed the incident, has not yet provided a statement, or possesses video footage to come forward. Witnesses can contact the IIO toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or submit information through the contact form on the agency’s website at iiobc.ca.
Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
