A North Vancouver man is facing attempted murder charges in the US after a botched murde attempt of a woman and her boyfriend in the city of Salinas in California.
In a press release, Monterey County Sheriff’s Detectives said they arrested two suspects in a stabbing incident that occurred on the 300 block of Bollenbacher Drive in the Bolsa Knolls area of Salinas. They have been identified as North Vancouver’s Devin Wolfgang Vandorhoef (age 25) and Darius Avery Whyte (age 25).
Police said just before 10 pm on Sunday, November 25th, 2024, they received multiple calls reporting that a person had been stabbed. Upon arrival, deputies were able to locate three people who had stabbing injuries. All three were taken to hospital with minor to critical injuries and are expected to survive.
Monterey County Sheriff Detectives learned that Vandorhoef and a female victim had met via a gaming platform. Vandorhoef developed a year long obsession with the victim and flew to California with he intention of harming her. Whyte accompanied Vandorhoef from Ontario. On the date of the stabbing, police said Vandorhoef arrived at a residence on Bollenbacher Drive and knocked on the door while holding a package. He identified himself as a delivery driver.
The victim’s boyfriend opened the door and Vandorhoef forced his way in and began stabbing the boyfriend with a knife that led to multiple critical injuries. The female grabbed a sharp metal object and began defending her boyfriend. While fighting back, the female victim was strangled and stabbed by the suspect and was moderately injured. During the struggle, the suspect sustained multiple critical stab wounds.
Detectives discovered that the package that Vandorhoef was carrying when he arrived, contained handcuffs, duct tape and knives. It is unknown how these items were intended to be used, police say. Whyte was initially contacted near the scene and claimed he had no knowledge of what happened.
The investigation determined that Whyte was an accomplice of Vandorhoef during this incident and that he had knowledge of Vandorhoef’s intentions. Whyte was arrested the morning of Monday, November 26th as he sat on a flight at San Jose Mineta International Airport, preparing to return to Canada.
Vandorhoef is currently being held on $4,150,000.00 bail. Whyte is being held on $1,000,000.00 bail. Both are charged with Attempted Murder and Conspiracy to Commit Attempted Murder among other charges.
