The North Shore Scouts kicked off their annual Christmas Tree sales on Clyde Ave just off Taylor Way on Saturday, and the event started with a ribbon cutting by West Vancouver Mayor Mark Sager.
“It was wonderful to have the opportunity to show a bit of support for our Scouts – my uncle on my mothers side of the family Jack Scrivener devoted his life to the Scouting movement. And I know he would be very happy I was there,” Mayor Sager said.
This is the 67th year of the tree sales and the funds raised will support programs for over 400 local boys and girls on the North Shore. The tree lot is located at Taylor Way and Clyde Avenue by Park Royal. Locals can choose their tree at the lot and have it delivered to their home as well.
The first ones to purchase a tree on Saturday were the grandchildren and great grandchildren of the late Gordon Rowntree, who served on the West Vancouver Council in the 80s with Sager. Gordon and Mark Sager’s mother, Shirley Sager, were part of the founding board of the West Vancouver Foundation which dates back to September 1979 – the year Mark was first elected as a school trustee in West Vancouver. “It was really great to see the Rowntree family and their support for the Scouts a very nice West Vancouver moment,” said Mayor Sager.
The first sale event was also attended by Steve McTaggart from the 21st Capilano group and Ken Gregson from the 6th street Anges group and boys from the 3rd street group.
