Planning is underway to open the south picnic area to the public at Belcarra Regional Park. The project will increase public access to this part of the park and its beaches and waterfront while improving ecological function, said Metro Vancouver.
In 2017, the Metro Vancouver Regional District Board approved the design concept for this area changing use from restricted access residential use to non-residential public use.
The design concept includes ecological restoration, adding three kilometres of trail to the existing trail network, and providing beach access. The project will also restore historic cabins as landscape displays and the Bole House for public use.
Design development will be undertaken with input from Tsleil-Waututh Nation as part of a Cultural Planning and Cooperation Agreement. Preparation of tender drawings, permitting, and archaeology are scheduled for 2022 with construction planned for 2023 and 2024.
