City of North Vancouver Councillor Shervin Shahriari has brought forward a notice of motion to address the increase in the number of currency exchanges in the city. His motion highlights the need to enhance the city’s street-level vibrancy and align with the City’s Strategic Plan.
Mainly targeting the Central Lonsdale area, the motion addresses concerns about the impact of these financial services on the street-level experience envisioned by the City of North Vancouver Strategic Plan. The strategic plan emphasizes creating “A Vibrant City” and activating public spaces for residents to gather and engage in activities.
“Financial services, such as currency exchanges, located at the street level do not add sufficiently to the vibrancy, balance, and diversity of the street-level experience as envisioned by the City of North Vancouver Strategic Plan,” his motion notes.
With projects like the Lonsdale Great Street in the pipeline, which aims to revitalize central areas and enhance walkability and vibrancy, Shahriari’s motion seeks to align the regulation of currency exchanges with the city’s overall vision for its commercial and public spaces.
Drawing attention to the existing restrictions on the number of licenses for cannabis and liquor stores across the city, Coun. Shahriari questions the lack of specific financial service regulations within the retail sector. His motion calls for staff to prepare a recommendation to the Council to restrict the number and the location of currency exchanges operating within the City of North Vancouver.

We have plenty of vibrancy in the Lonsdale area Mr Shahriari. The currency exchange places are needed because they create a healthy competition for the banks located in the same area. These currency exchange places run by Iranians. Did anyone from Persion community get on the wrong side of Mr Shahriari? Why is he attacking Persion businesses? We don’t need any more condos in Losdale area. Greedy for tax money local government doesn’t care about local businesses. They get pushed out, and more condos get built. Life quality on Northshore keeps deteriorating due to high traffic, lack of parking places, air pollution and cost of living.
Mr. Shahriari, leave the business alone. Stop keep approving new high-rise building in the Lonsdale corridor. We don’t need your “vibrancy”, whatever that means. We need regular businesses (little guys) who provide regular services on Northshore.
