At the Council meeting on Monday, November 20, Mayor Sager announced that the West Vancouver Place for Sport project, located at West Vancouver Secondary School, is moving forward.
Construction is scheduled to begin in late November and is anticipated to be complete by winter 2025. This project has been made possible with funds from the Growing Communities Fund, generously provided by the BC Ministry of Municipal Affairs.
“Recreation amenities are essential for vibrant communities, and this new sports facility will be a destination for young people to train, compete and have fun,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “The District of West Vancouver is a leader for other B.C. communities looking to use the Growing Communities Fund allocation to benefit the people who live, work, and play in their community, now and for future generations.”
“This is an incredible opportunity and asset for West Vancouver, its residents, and athletes of tomorrow,” said Mayor Mark Sager. “This has been a long time in the making and I am thrilled for our community that Place for Sport is our new reality. It is the result of a lot of hard work by committed and passionate people, and we are grateful for the funding provided through the Growing Communities Fund.”
The new sports facility will include a six-lane track, an artificial turf field with lighting, long jump, high jump, triple jump, pole vault and shotput, with training areas for discus, hammer and javelin throwing. Washrooms at West Vancouver Secondary School will be renovated as part of the project and be open to the public outside of school hours to accommodate the facility.
In February 2021, West Vancouver Schools, in partnership with the District of West Vancouver, announced that the running track will be named the Harry Jerome Oval, in honour of one of Canada’s most celebrated athletes.
