The North Shore Bike Park has announced the availability of four Bold Helmets (tailored for Sikh children aged five and above) for rent while visiting the indoor bike park.
Designed to prioritize comfort, superior fit, and safety, Bold Helmets provide a solution to the challenge of finding suitable protection for children who wear the traditional Patka—a small topknot covered by cloth typically worn by boys from pre-kindergarten to middle school before they transition to wearing a turban.
The North Shore Bike Park, located inside Capilano Mall in North Vancouver, is the largest indoor bike park in British Columbia. The massive area has several zones for riders of varying skill levels, including jumps, berms, rollers, a state-of-the-art pump track, and an airbag zone to practice stunts in a low-consequence environment. There are also sections for scooters and run bikes, and each section is designed to be fun, challenging and safe.
Bold Helmets, formerly known as Sikh Helmets, was founded by Tina Singh, an occupational therapist and mother who recognized the necessity of helmets that accommodate the unique cultural and religious practices of Sikh children. “I was frustrated that there wasn’t a safe option in sports helmets for my kids,” she said. “I spent so much of my time as an occupational therapist working in the area of acquired brain injury that I knew that I didn’t want my kids riding without a helmet.”
So, she decided to create her own and spent two years designing and testing the helmets. “It’s not something I’ve ever done before,” she said.
The helmets feature a unique shape and structure that allow for the comfortable integration of the patka while providing the necessary protection for biking, scootering, inline skating, and skateboarding.
“Having Bold Helmets available in establishments like North Shore Bike Parks sends an important message of inclusion to the local community.” said Singh. “When a Sikh child with a patka goes to North Shore Bike Park, they don’t have to worry about ‘the helmet issue’; there is an option for them to be included, and that’s the whole reason why Bold Helmets exist in the first place.”
The Bold Helmets available for rent at North Shore Bike Park are safety certified by CPSC, CE, UKCA, and ASTM, ensuring parents that their children are well-protected during their biking adventures. The helmets come in two sizes: small, which fits kids with a head circumference of 48-56cm, and medium, which fits those with a head circumference of 56-59cm. Additionally, the helmets feature a comfortable and removable liner, fit adjustment dial, and adjustable strap to ensure a snug and secure fit.
“Bold Helmets was born out of the need to provide a solution for Sikh kids who wear the Patka and require helmets that accommodate their religious practices,” Singh said. With Bold Helmets now available to rent, parents can rest assured that their kids are protected and included in the biking community.
