The Metro Vancouver Regional District has issued an Air Quality Bulletin following the release of thick smoke from a train trestle fire on the Fraser River near the Oak Street bridge between Vancouver and Richmond. The fire started earlier today and is expected to continue burning through Thursday night and into Friday.
Metro Vancouver issues Air Quality Bulletins to alert residents about localized air quality concerns that do not necessitate a broader Air Quality Advisory. Staff from Metro Vancouver are on-site, collaborating with Richmond Fire-Rescue to manage the situation and monitor the air quality. Data from air quality monitoring stations throughout the region is being continuously assessed to track the impact of the smoke.
The Air Quality Bulletin is currently in effect for the following areas:
- Metro Vancouver – Northwest
- Metro Vancouver – Southwest
- Metro Vancouver – Northeast
- Metro Vancouver – Southeast
Residents in these areas who detect smoke are advised to stay indoors and close windows, doors, and air intakes to minimize exposure to the smoke.
Health Precautions:
- Monitor Symptoms: Seek medical attention for symptoms such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, severe coughing or wheezing, and dizziness. Check on family, friends, and neighbors frequently, and call 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.
- Check Air Quality Regularly: Stay updated on the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) at airmap.ca and gov.bc.ca/airqualitymap. Follow the health messages corresponding to the AQHI rating to make informed decisions about outdoor activities. Air quality can fluctuate throughout the day and by location, so it’s important to check the AQHI often. Sign up for Air Quality Advisory alerts and updates at metrovancouver.org.
